Southwark Removals Health and Safety Policy
Southwark Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, contractors, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial moves, packing, handling, loading, transportation, and unloading of goods.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with relevant health and safety legislation, and continually improve our safety performance. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing appropriate control measures, and promoting a positive safety culture across all areas of our removal services.
Management Responsibilities
The management team at Southwark Removals has overall responsibility for health and safety. This includes ensuring that appropriate resources, equipment, training, and supervision are provided to enable safe working practices. Management will review this policy regularly and update it as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards, or the nature of our operations.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on a day-to-day basis, monitoring compliance on site, and taking prompt action to address any safety concerns. They must ensure that employees understand their responsibilities and follow all relevant procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Southwark Removals has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff are required to:
Follow training and safety instructions relevant to their role; Use equipment, tools, and vehicles correctly and safely; Report hazards, near misses, accidents, and unsafe conditions immediately to a supervisor; Cooperate with management to implement safety measures and improvements; Wear and maintain personal protective equipment where required.
Failure to follow health and safety procedures may result in disciplinary action, as safety is a fundamental part of our working standards and service delivery.
Risk Assessments and Safe Working Practices
Southwark Removals conducts risk assessments for typical removal tasks, including manual handling, working in confined or restricted areas, operating on stairs, loading and unloading vehicles, and working at clients premises. These assessments identify hazards and set out control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and communicated to all relevant staff. They cover topics such as safe lifting techniques, team handling methods, securing loads in vehicles, use of trolleys and lifting aids, and procedures for handling fragile or heavy items.
Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Health
Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is one of the main sources of workplace injuries. To reduce the risk of strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal issues, we:
Provide training in correct lifting and carrying techniques; Encourage team lifting for heavy or awkward items; Use appropriate equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, and straps; Plan each move to minimise unnecessary carrying distances and obstacles; Rotate tasks where possible to limit repetitive strain.
Employees are encouraged to report any early signs of discomfort so that adjustments to tasks or equipment can be made promptly.
Vehicles, Driving, and Transportation Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition through regular checks, servicing, and inspections. Drivers are required to carry out daily vehicle checks and report any defects immediately so that they can be rectified before use.
We expect all drivers to follow road traffic laws, drive responsibly, and consider the safety of passengers, other road users, and pedestrians. Loads must be properly distributed, secured, and checked before departure and at appropriate intervals during journeys. Parking and unloading are planned to minimise risk to staff and the public, particularly in busy or restricted streets.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our teams work in a variety of home and business environments. To protect clients and the public, we:
Assess access routes and working spaces on arrival; Keep walkways clear and minimise trip hazards from packaging and equipment; Use protective coverings where required to reduce slip and trip risks; Communicate clearly with clients about where work is taking place; Take particular care when moving large items through shared areas, stairwells, and entrances.
Where work takes place in common or public areas, we take steps to segregate the work zone where reasonably practicable and remain alert to members of the public moving through the area.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Southwark Removals provides appropriate training to all employees, including induction training for new staff and ongoing refresher training as required. This may include topics such as manual handling, use of lifting equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness, and incident reporting.
Supervisors and team leaders ensure that less experienced staff are supervised and supported, particularly during complex or high-risk moves. Safety information and instructions are communicated clearly and updated when processes or equipment change.
Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All equipment supplied by Southwark Removals, including vehicles, trolleys, ramps, and lifting aids, must be used in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective.
Where identified by risk assessment, appropriate personal protective equipment is provided, such as safety footwear, gloves, or high-visibility clothing. Employees must use and look after this equipment and report any loss or damage without delay.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported promptly so that they can be recorded, investigated, and, where necessary, lead to improvements in our procedures. We maintain records of incidents and use them to identify patterns and implement corrective actions.
Our staff are briefed on emergency procedures relevant to their work, including what to do in the event of fire, serious injury, or other emergencies at customer premises or in transit. First aid arrangements are in place, and employees are informed of how to obtain assistance.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Southwark Removals encourages open communication about health and safety. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements, and participate in discussions about safer ways of working. Where practical, we consult with staff when developing or revising risk assessments and procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and reflects current legal requirements, industry best practice, and the evolving nature of our removal services. Our goal is to provide reliable, efficient, and safe removals for all our customers while maintaining the highest standards of care for our workforce and the wider community.
