The Thames has long been an important feature in Gravesend life and may well have been the deciding factor for the first settlement here. One of the town's first distinctions was in being given the sole right to transport passengers to and from London by water in the late 14th century. The "Tilt Boat" was a familiar sight on the river. The first steamboat plied its trade between Gravesend and London in the early 19th century, bringing with it a steadily increasing number of visitors to The Terrace Pier Gardens, Windmill Hill, Springhead Gardens and Rosherville Gardens. Gravesend soon became one of the first English resort towns and thrived from an early tourist trade.
The first railway to arrive in Gravesend was the Gravesend & Rochester Railway (G&RR) who had purchased the Thames and Medway Canal and its tunnel between Strood and Higham. The G&RR ran the first train to the then terminus at Gravesend on 10 February 1845. On 30 July 1849 the line was extended to North Kent East Junction on the South Eastern Railway (SER) and thence to London Bridge.
The Latinised adjective 'Roffensis' refers to Rochester.[4]
The station has three ground-level platforms; Platforms 2 and 3 are on an island platform and Platform 1 is at the eastern side. The entrance and ticket office adjoin Platform 1, with a tunnel from that platform leading to the island. Platforms 2 and 1 mainly handle traffic to and from London respectively, with Maidstone and Paddock Wood services terminating at and returning from Platform 3.
