The area is a very beautiful part of the Chiltern Hills, and is very popular with London executives due to its proximity to road (Junction 3 of the M40 motorway at Loudwater) and rail (Mainline rail at Beaconsfield and London Underground at Amersham) links into the city.
High Wycombe has been home to two Prime Ministers; the Earl of Shelburne lived at what is now Wycombe Abbey (and was also MP for the town), and Benjamin Disraeli, who was defeated as an independent candidate in 1832. Disraeli made his first political speech in Wycombe, from the portico over the door of the Red Lion Hotel on the High Street (now Iceland/ Pound world).
Since the US Navy's departure from the greater London area, the need for facilities at RAF Daws Hill have greatly diminished and the station is now being vacated. London Central High School graduated its last class in 2007 and is now closed. Other station facilities such as base housing and the shopette and gas station closed in August 2007.[1]
The Tesco building is considered by some to out of place, compared to the new, modern-looking buildings. Construction of the new centre begun in October 2005[4] and was to take about two and a half years. As well as the new building containing the new shopping centre, a new multi-storey car park was built to connect with the existing Newlands Car Park and the old part refurbished. The new bus station was built alongside the shopping centre, with direct access to the shops from the bus station. The old bus garage was viewed as dangerous at night with little lighting so the new station was welcomed. The new bus station opened in July 2006.
The Elizabeth bridge carries the A322 Windsor By-pass across the River Thames, on the reach between Romney Lock and Boveney Lock. The bridge was completed in 1966, and has formed the principal road route between the adjacent towns of Windsor and Eton since 1970, when structural cracks in the central Windsor Bridge forced that bridge's closure to all but pedestrian traffic,
