The southern approach of the Blackwall Tunnel crossing of the River Thames is located to the west. It is served by Charlton railway station on the lines from London to Dartford via Greenwich and Lewisham. The area is served by London bus routes 53, 54, 161, 177, 180, 472, 486, 422, 380 and N1. North Greenwich is the nearest tube station, a short bus ride to the north.
Goldsmiths' alumni have been influential in the fields of film, journalism, literature, theatre, music, politics, sport, and the visual arts.
London Underground's East London Line closed on 22 December 2007 and reopened on 27 April 2010, becoming part of the London Overground network. The service was also closed between 1995 and 1998 due to repair work on the East London Line's Thames Tunnel.
The observatory was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II, with the foundation stone being laid on 10 August.[1] At this time the king also created the position of Astronomer Royal (initially filled by John Flamsteed), to serve as the director of the observatory and to "apply himself with the most exact care and diligence to the rectifying of the tables of the motions of the heavens, and the places of the fixed stars, so as to find out the so much desired longitude of places for the perfecting of the art of navigation." The building was completed in the summer of 1676[2]. The building was often given the title "Flamsteed House".
Although the House survived as an official building?being used for the lying-in-state of Commonwealth Generals-at-Sea Richard Dean (1653) and Robert Blake (1657)?the main palace was progressively demolished from the 1660s to 1690s and replaced by the Royal Hospital for Seamen,[9] built 1696-1751 to the master-plan of Sir Christopher Wren. This is now called the Old Royal Naval College, after its later use from 1873 to 1998. The position of the House, and Queen Mary II's order that it retain its view to the river (only gained on demolition of the older Palace), dictated Wren's Hospital design of two matching pairs of 'courts' separated by a grand 'visto' exactly the width of the House (115 ft). The whole forms an impressive architectural ensemble that stretches from the Thames to Greenwich Park and is one of the principal features that in 1997 led UNESCO to inscribe 'Maritime Greenwich' as a World Heritage Site.
