The school's building later became Enfield Town railway station until it was demolished in 1872. The current building was erected in the 1960s. In 1937 a County Review Order enlarged the urban district by taking in the entire Hoddesdon Rural parish and parts of the parishes of Broxbourne, Great Amwell, Stanstead Abbotts and Wormley. The western boundary of the urban district was fixed by the track of the Roman Ermine Street. Hoddesdon Urban District was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, when it merged with Cheshunt Urban District to become the Borough of Broxbourne.Hertford CastleIn 1911, the Hertford Corporation leased the gatehouse of the castle (which was all that then remained) from the Earl of Salisbury to house its administration. The grounds became a public garden. In the 1930s the north wing was added to the gatehouse and subsequently what was left of the castle was given to the town by the Earl of Salisbury.
