Much Hadham

The Red Lion coaching inn, now converted into private houses, has existed in the village since the fifteenth century. It was a stopping point on the old road from London to Cambridge. Legend has it that a tunnel connected the pub to St. Andrew's, possibly built during the time of Oliver Cromwell to serve as an escape route for the clergy. The skeleton of an eighteen-year-old woman was discovered bricked up in a fireplace in the inn. It is thought she died after being incarcerated, some time during the nineteenth century.

Enfield Town

The poet John Keats went to progressive Clarke's School in Enfield, where he began a translation of the Aeneid. Barely five feet tall, Keats was not know at school for his enthusiasm for books, but his fighting. "My mind has been the most discontented and restless one that ever was put into a body too small for it," he wrote. The school's building later became Enfield Town railway station until it was demolished in 1872. The current building was erected in the 1960s. In 1840 the first section of the Northern and Eastern Railway had been opened from Stratford to Broxbourne. The branch line from Water Lane to Enfield Town station was opened in 1849.

Rye House Stadium

The stadium dates back to the 1930s has hosted greyhound racing, speedway and Stock car racing. The stadium has recently been upgraded by the owner, speedway promoter Len Silver. Next to the stadium is Rye House Kart Circuit which was built on a former site of the speedway track.[1]

Hoddesdon

Part of Hoddesdon was created an urban district by the Local Government Act 1894, the remainder becoming the parish of Hoddesdon Rural in the Ware Rural District. In 1937 a County Review Order enlarged the urban district by taking in the entire Hoddesdon Rural parish and parts of the parishes of Broxbourne, Great Amwell, Stanstead Abbotts and Wormley. The western boundary of the urban district was fixed by the track of the Roman Ermine Street. Hoddesdon Urban District was abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972, when it merged with Cheshunt Urban District to become the Borough of Broxbourne.

Hertford Castle

In 1911, the Hertford Corporation leased the gatehouse of the castle (which was all that then remained) from the Earl of Salisbury to house its administration. The grounds became a public garden. In the 1930s the north wing was added to the gatehouse and subsequently what was left of the castle was given to the town by the Earl of Salisbury. Hertford Castle now houses the offices of the town council.
