Sawyers Hall College opened in 1936 as a single block mixed school known as Brentwood Secondary School. However, genders were separated during school hours. Later in life, the school expanded and genders were allowed to mix. When it was the first school in the area to become Comprehensive, it was renamed Hedley Walter after the Chairman of Governors. Under the Head, Arthur Gregson, the school went from strength to strength as a pioneer of mixed ability teaching and the innovative Humanities course.[citation needed] Visiting educationalists from all over the country and the world came to learn these new techniques.[citation needed] In the last decade around 2003, the school's name was changed to Sawyers Hall College. The original school building, circa 1936, is now known as The Jack Petchey Building, or simply Block 4.
The Director of Music at Brentwood School is David Pickthall, a conductor and composer. One of his proudest accomplishments was his involvement in Wallace & Gromit's The Wrong Trousers. He can be seen at events such as school Chamber Concerts, and takes the school orchestra abroad, as far as Siena, Italy. He often allows the Liam Taylor Jazz Band, which consists of Brentwood School pupils, to play short sets as part of Big Band events.[5]
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brentwood is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic church in England. The diocese is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
The station has a crossover, to the West of the platforms, enabling trains to terminate there and return to service in the opposite direction.
Modern settlement originated in Anglo-Saxon times when it consisted of Havering Palace and the surrounding lands that belonged to the king. The palace itself is known to have existed since at least the reign of Edward the Confessor when it was one of his primary residences. The area formed a liberty from 1465 which included the parishes of Havering atte Bower, Hornchurch and Romford.
