Hertford CastleHowever from the reign of James I the castle ceased to be a royal residence and it fell into decay. After Charles I came to the throne the castle was granted to William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury. Much of the castle was now in ruins having not having been used since Tudor times. The castle was leased to Sir William Harrington of Hertingfordbury Park, who carried out work to restore the buildings. He then assigned his lease to Sir William Cowper, Collector of Customs at the Port of London. From this time the castle remained in the ownership of the Cecil family, who leased it out to a succession of occupiers, many of them successors to William Cowper. Around 1790 the south wing was added to the gatehouse. Around 1800 a new gateway and lodge were built by the Marquis of Downshire.HertfordIn comparison with neighbouring towns Hertford differs with the absence of a modern shopping development (mall). However, it has most of the usual supermarkets. A Tesco store occupies part of the former Christ's Hospital Bluecoat Girls School, which closed down in 1985. Sainsburys plans to build a new store on part of the McMullens Brewery site. The local branch of Woolworths closed for good on 27 December 2008, after the collapse of that store chain. There are very few of the usual chain shops found in most high streets and this makes Hertford stand out from other "clone towns". There are a high number of independent shops in the town, with a variety of boutiques and salons.HoddesdonBy the mid-nineteenth century the town still consisted principally of one street, and had a population of 1,743. Malt was being produced and transported to London via the River Lee. There were also a number of flour mills.[8] Trade in Hoddesdon was centered on the hops market each Thursday. As time went on, more and more hops were carried on the river rather than the roads and the Wednesday meat market took predominance. The Wednesday market has survived in Hoddesdon and was joined in the late 20th century by a Friday market.Rye House StadiumThe stadium dates back to the 1930s has hosted greyhound racing, speedway and Stock car racing. The stadium has recently been upgraded by the owner, speedway promoter Len Silver. Next to the stadium is Rye House Kart Circuit which was built on a former site of the speedway track.[1]North FinchleyNorth Finchley is a suburb of London in the London Borough of Barnet, situated 7 miles (11.3 km) north-west of Charing Cross.Information by Wikipedia.com
