Hythe Station along with Colchester Town the next stop on the line towards London on the Line From Walton-on-the-Naze are the only two stations on the Sunshine Coast Route along with the sign at the ticket office at Clacton-on-Sea to still have First Great Eastern Livery signs still erected, although the First label has been removed due to First Group losing the Great Eastern Franchise. The Great Eastern Logo along with the blue green and white are still here today. As of January 2010, the First Great Eastern signs have been replaced by the newer National Express East Anglia signs.
It is located between the Hythe and Greenstead areas of the town, with the A133 (St Andrew's Avenue); Avon Way; Greenstead Road and the A134 (Elmstead Road).
Later in the 17th century part of the upper structure was pulled down for building material in the town by a Mr. Wheeler who went bankrupt in the process. In 1726, the castle passed into the possession of Charles Gray (the Member of Parliament for Colchester), who restored it and added the present day Italianate facade and tower (which are not original), as he thought it was a Roman structure. He created a private park around the ruin and his summer house (perched on the old Norman castle earthworks, in the shape of a Roman temple) can still be seen. Charles Gray also added a library and a study, and gave the castle a red tiled roof that is still visible today. In 1892, the castle and the surrounding park were given to the town and they have remained as the Upper and Lower Castle Parks ever since. The castle is now a public museum.
The maze was constructed in 1988, using 2,400 yew trees. To the disappointment of some who use the technique of solving a maze by keeping one hand on a wall while walking through as a wall follower, the method fails at the Leeds Castle Maze, because not all 'walls' are connected. Generally, however, the maze does not take a very long time. For those who may find it harder, there are guides with a view of the entire maze who may help people who are lost.
The whole island and part of the bank near the causeway are now a Nature Reserve. It is uninhabited apart from the warden.
