The station is named after a nearby crossing of the River Ingrebourne.[10] The river was the boundary between the ancient parishes of Hornchurch and Upminster and the station is located on the western Hornchurch side.[11] The station is situated on Upminster Road in the London Borough of Havering and is flanked by a parade of shops. It is situated in a primarily residential area and is near to Havering Sixth Form College and Hornchurch Stadium.[12][13] London bus routes 248 and 370 serve the site of the station, providing connections to Hornchurch, Lakeside, Romford and Upminster.[14] The London Loop key walking route passes outside the station, and it forms the end point of section 22 from Harold Wood and the starting point of section 23 to Rainham.[15][16] The station is located on the eastern extremity of the District line and is the penultimate station before the terminus at Upminster.[17] Upminster station is 1.24 kilometres (0.77 mi) to the east of the station and Hornchurch is 1.26 kilometres (0.78 mi) to the west.[18]
Originally Upminster windmall had canvas sails, but the sails on the mill when it ceased working commercially were four double Patent sails[2]. They were carried on two stocks 46 feet (14.02 m) long, 12 inches (300 mm) square at the centre, tapering to 9 inches (230 mm) by 6 inches (150 mm) at the ends. The sails were 70 feet (21.34 m) in span, and tapered from 7 feet (2.13 m) wide at the heel to 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) at the tip. Each sail had twelve bays with three shutters per bay, giving a total of 288 shutters, each carved with a number in roman numerals to indicate its location. The weather on the sails was 23Ë? at the heel and almost 0Ë? at the tip.[4]
The London Tilbury and Southend Railway connected London with Tilbury in 1854 and with Southend in 1856. The route to Southend was not direct, taking a considerable diversion in order to serve the port at Tilbury. Between 1885 and 1888 a new direct route from Barking to Pitsea was constructed, with the station at Upminster opening in 1885. The Whitechapel and Bow Railway opened in 1902 and allowed through services of the Metropolitan District Railway to operate over the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway tracks to Upminster, which became the eastern terminus.[3] The Metropolitan District converted to electric trains in 1905 and services were cut back to East Ham. Delayed by World War I,[4]electrified tracks were extended by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway to Upminster and through services resumed in 1932.[3][5]
As Stanford-le-Hope grows in size, it has started to incorporate neighbouring settlements such as Corringham, Mucking and Fobbing, the latter of which was the scene of one of the uprisings which led to the Peasants' Revolt.
Snodland has three pubs- The Bull, The Freemasons Arms and The Monks Head, which hold their own history. There are also two Workingmen's Clubs- Snodland WMC and Ham Hill WMC.
